What is a Doula?
A doula is a trained professional who provides continuous physical, emotional, and informational support to families during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. Doulas do not provide medical care but work alongside healthcare providers to ensure a positive and empowering experience.
What is a Postpartum Doula?
A postpartum doula offers specialized support to families after the birth of their baby. They assist with newborn care, breastfeeding guidance, emotional support, and light household tasks, helping parents transition smoothly into their new roles.
What can a Doula offer that’s different from the support of Friends/Family?
While friends and family provide invaluable love and support, a doula brings professional expertise, evidence-based knowledge, and unbiased guidance. Doulas are trained to focus solely on your needs, offering continuous, non-judgmental support tailored to your unique journey.
How does a Doula support my partner?
A doula supports your partner by providing reassurance, guidance, and practical tools to help them feel confident and involved during labor and postpartum. This allows your partner to be fully present and engaged while sharing the experience with you.
What if I have a cesarean birth?
Doulas are equally valuable during cesarean births. They can help you prepare emotionally, provide support during the procedure (if allowed), and assist with recovery and breastfeeding afterward. A doula ensures you feel informed and supported, no matter how your baby is born.
When should I hire a doula?
It’s best to hire a doula as early in your pregnancy as possible. This allows time to build a strong relationship, discuss your preferences, and create a personalized birth plan. However, doulas can be hired at any stage of pregnancy or even postpartum.
How much support do I need?
The level of support varies for each family. Some may need help only during labor, while others may benefit from ongoing postpartum care. During our initial consultation, we’ll discuss your needs and create a plan that works best for you.
Can a doula help with breastfeeding?
Yes, many doulas are trained in breastfeeding support and can offer guidance on latching, positioning, and overcoming common challenges. If additional help is needed, they can also connect you with a lactation consultant.
